Kano: police, military recover 67 cows, other livestock from rustlers in Gwarzo

Police and the military Joint Task Force (JTF) have recovered 67 cows and other livestock from rustlers in Gwarzo Local Government Area, Kano state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said the community-based intelligence-led operation was  in line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, Mr.  Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to him, operatives of the Kano State Police Command in collaboration with the Military JTF, deployed at the Kano-Katsina border,  recorded another major success against criminal elements in the state.

Mr. Bakori said on 6 May, 2026,  the Command received credible intelligence that suspected cattle rustlers had rustled livestock from several villages around Gwarzo and neighboring areas.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a combined team of police operatives from Gwarzo Police Division and Military JTF personnel were  mobilized and moved to the affected areas.

On sighting the security team, the suspects engaged them in a gun duel.

Due to the superior firepower and tactical superiority of the joint team, the criminals were overpowered and forced to abandon the rustled livestock and flee outside the State.

During the operation, the following exhibits were  recovered:  67 cows, one donkey, and one sheep.

The recovered livestock were taken into safe custody at the Gwarzo Division.

Following proper identification and verification, the herds were formally released to their rightful owners on 7 May, 2026,  through the respective District Heads, under the supervision of the Local Government Chairman.

Meanwhile, intensified manhunt and intelligence-led operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while monitoring continues in the affected communities to prevent a recurrence.

Mr.  Bakori commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the operatives and the synergy with the military JTF.

He reiterated that the Command will not relent in its resolve to rid the state of criminal elements threatening the peace and livelihood of rural communities.

Mr.  Bakori further urged residents, especially in rural areas, to continue to cooperate with the Police by providing timely and credible information that can aid in proactive policing and crime prevention.

He assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives, property, and the agricultural economy of Kano State.
