Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC), has announced her resignation, effective March 15, 2026—one year before the scheduled expiration of her tenure in April 2027.
She became the fifth chairperson of the NEC in 2020, pledging to “strengthen the commission’s core values of independence, integrity, professionalism, and consistency.”
Liberia, alongside Senegal and Ghana, remains among the three West African countries that have demonstrated some degree of resilience in sustaining electoral democracy within an otherwise politically restive region.
The reasons for her sudden resignation remain unclear. However, indications suggest a combination of job fatigue and growing dissatisfaction.
In an exclusive telephone conversation with this medium, Browne-Lansanah hinted at these concerns, stating, “I’ve done my best. I want to focus on my family as a single mother. I leave the rest to posterity.”
Since assuming leadership of the NEC, she has been embroiled in a prolonged dispute with some of her fellow commissioners, who were suspected of acting on behalf of politically exposed individuals to undermine her authority.
Last year, she was accused of ordering the closure of NEC offices for a month and dismissing 25 staff members without the knowledge or approval of the Board of Commissioners, as required by law.
The action triggered protests by some staff members and ultimately led to her suspension by the government in January 2025.
Diplomatic sources indicated that her resignation was largely driven by “mounting pressures.”
Liberia’s next general elections are scheduled for October 2029.
