There was water-tight security within Kano metropolis on Monday, when Vice President Kashim Shettima, government functionaries, and notable heavyweights of the All Progressive Congress (APC) stormed Kano for the grand reception of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the party.
Sani Abacha International Stadium, venue of the event, and all roads leading towards Kofar Mata were surrounded and manned by heavily armed security operatives who scrutinized both vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Owing to the heavy security presence, some politicians and even journalists who were supposed to cover the event could not gain entrance into the main venue, as security operatives were determined to ensure that hoodlums and anti-state elements did not disrupt the reception ceremony that attracted high-profile politicians from across the country.
Politicians and the Federal Government also used the opportunity to sympathize with Governor Yusuf, over last Saturday’s fire disaster that razed parts of the popular Singer Market, where property worth billions of Naira was destroyed, and seven persons were declared missing as at the time of filing this report.
The Federal Government donated N5 billion to traders at the razed market, while politicians, including the Progressive Governors’ Forum, sympathized with the affected traders, with donations that could help assuage their losses.
The reception ceremony was grand and fulfilling as no casualty was recorded as at the time of filling this report, even though people reportedly lost their personal belongings during the struggle to gain entrance into the venue.
However, there was unprecedented crowd inside the stadium where Vice President Shettima, APC National Chairman and other heavyweights warmly welcomed Governor Yusuf into the party.
All who spoke during the reception rally hailed Governor Yusuf’s uncommon courage for joining the progressives for the overall interest of the people of Kano state.
