Among the key bullet points in the final communique at yesterdays crucial 68th ECOWAS summit in Abuja, was “total rejection of Guinea Bissau’s military transition.”
Instead, ECOWAS insists that an all-inclusive and short transition must be formed immediately to lead to civil rule.
The meeting which was declared opened by Nigerian Vice President, Kashim Shetima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, also called for “ fostering democratic fronts following the Benin coup attempt.”
Another key component of the communique is the “ overwhelming support to Ghana’s President John Mahama for the AU chairmanship position”
Guinea Bissau coup is the 9th in West Africa in five years.
The region is the least developed in Africa, with the vast majority of its peoples living in deplorable conditions, in the midst of weak institutions, corruption, and maladministration.
ECOWAS has however, recorded some successes in the areas of conflict resolution, peace and stability and the promotion of democracy, particularly in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Ivory Coast and now Guinea-Bissau
