Civil Society Group demands accountability for Human Rights Abuse, Stronger Economy,True Democracy

Civil society groups and pro-democracy activists have called for accountability for human rights abuses and demanded a stronger economy, true democracy, and good governance to move the Nation forward.

The Civil Society Group in an event which was attended by top government dignitaries, human rights advocates, and representatives of various civic groups to mark the 2025 World Human Right Day, theme: “HUMAN RIGHTS, OUR EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS: ALL HUMAN BEINGS ARE BORN FREE AND EQUAL IN DIGNITY AND RIGHTS”,  aimed to amplify advocacy for the protection and promotion of human rights, with a focus on issues such as police brutality, social violence, assaults, and repression.

At the event, the Ogun State NBA Chairman, Barr. Kayode Aderemi urged the media to strengthen their approach to reporting human rights issues, stressing the need to highlight fundamental rights more effectively.

The convener and Chairman of the Coalition, Comrade Solomon Bankole, noted that the gathering was part of continuous efforts to raise awareness on rights abuses across the country, while calling for a just and equitable society.

Com Bankole noted that the protest against it is currently ongoing, organized by the United Action for Democracy (UAD) and other groups; however called for an end to bad governance, insecurity, food scarcity, and sham trials against protesters.

Also, Comrade Ashaye Wasiu, Coordinator of UAD Ogun State, condemned the government’s policies, saying they have endangered the basic rights of Nigerians.

He noted that protesters presented several demands, including the withdrawal of charges against protesters, the release of those still in detention, and an end to anti-poor policies.

The protests coincided with the trial of Lenin and 10 others at the Federal High Court, Abuja, and were marked by solidarity actions in Nigeria, the UK, Germany, the US, Canada, Australia, and other countries.

The UAD and its allies called on trade unions, civil society organizations, and individuals to support their demands and join the struggle for human rights and social justice.

The event was also marked by a poignant moment of silence in honour of the late human rights activist, Tunde Oladunjoye, who was remembered for his contributions to the struggle for a just society.
