Working under the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and acting on the outcome of a virtual meeting of the Authority of Heads of State a few days ago, ECOWAS Chairman, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, has arrived in Guinea-Bissau for a crucial meeting with the military coupists.
Bio’s mission is simple, direct, and frank: release the detained opposition candidate, allow the electoral body to release the results, and return to the barracks.
A former military head of state, Bio understands the military language he will convey to his former area of operations.
Guinea-Bissau, a narcotic state, is now in a political stalemate. The election results were stalled. Former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló was the architect of the military coup, as he announced the coup and his own arrest.
He was whisked out, first to Senegal, where he was refused entry by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, and later flown to Congo, where he is currently in exile.
Bio’s trip is crucial to the restoration of constitutional order. With his military antecedents, Bio is expected to persuade the military to abide by the prevailing global trends of democratic governance.
