David Cross Idukomose (born 2 August 1982), professionally known as Kwate (and sometimes as Cross David or Omini Kwate), is a Nigerian hip-hop and Afrobeats artist whose career blends deep cultural roots with modern flair. He grew up in between Illorin in Kwara State and Benin City and later in Lagos where he was born. He studied computer science at the University of Benin even as music remained his true passion. Yesterday Kwate was awarded the 2025 African Creative Impact Leader of the Year at the African Entrepreneurship & Business Awards of this year.
Over more than a decade in the industry, Kwate has released a number of songs that show off his versatility, including “Party Dey Here” (2010), “Baby Give Me More” (2011), and more recently “On Ground,” which has earned strong digital traction. His 2025 single, “Usain Bolt,” skyrocketed to No. 1 on Nigeria’s Shazam Top 200 chart, proving his reach and relevance in today’s Afrobeats scene.
Kwate’s style is a weaving of traditional Nigerian sounds, social commentary, and modern rhythms. He draws inspiration from legendary figures like Fela Kuti and Victor Uwaifo, as well as from global artists such as 50 Cent
Beenie Man. Beyond music, he’s also an IT professional and entrepreneur, running ventures in healthcare and coffee.
