On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Nigeria will be 65. The Tinubu government has said it is turning the corner to an era of prosperity.
In the international scene, Nigeria scores high in restoring peace and stability, not only in West Africa, but in other trouble spots in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The successes of the country’s military engagements were achievable through civilian support.
I’m limiting Nigeria’s military successes in West Africa, anchored on civilian support, as my coverage of West Africa spans over 3 decades.
Some civilians were supportive of ECOMOG’s successes in Sierra Leone.
However, one name stands out clearly, with empirical commendation letters from various ECOMOG Force Commanders or their designated representatives.
Chief Tony Izibundu Chinyere’s support and commendations from ECOMOG stand tall.
I had published how he used his helicopter and hovercraft services to ferry ECOMOG military personnel, rebels, and government officials to the negotiating table to discuss peace and stability in the West African region.
Below are commendation letters from ECOMOG operation theatres and the Nigerian Embassy in Freetown.
Such public-spirited personalities should be given national awards, in view of their selfless services to restore peace and stability in West Africa.
Democracy thrives today in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and in other countries, due mainly to the patriotic services of nationals, and even foreigners, who support, openly or covertly, the sustainability of democracy in West Africa and beyond.
As Nigeria clocks 65 on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, the country’s image and prestige in West Africa are intact and acknowledged.
