Barely a month ago, on August 15, 2025, when President Joseph Boakai officially signed into law the 2025 Liberia National Tourism Authority LNTA Act, the agency is set to make Liberia Africa’s new choicest tourist destination.
This was revealed by the Presidential Special Envoy on Tourism, Office of the President, and CEO of LNTA, Ambassador Chris Hayes Onanuga, yesterday.
LNTA is a significant development and a game changer in Liberia’s tourism sector, which is rich in potential but has been dormant for many years.
Tourism is a key pillar of President Boakai’s ARREST program, embedded in his campaign manifesto that brought him to power in October 2023.
Presidential special envoy, Ambassador Onanuga, further remarked that the new LNTA, when fully operational, will refine and enhance the tourism landscape to attract both local and international tourists, thereby stimulating business growth and creating sustainable employment opportunities.
With a board comprising Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Internal Affairs, Information and a representative from the Chamber of Commerce, with other key stakeholders in both government and the private sector, Ambassador Onanuga is upbeat that LNTA will deliver positive results.
The sector has been dormant for many years, unlike in neighbouring Gambia, where it has long been a revenue spinner to the GDP. Onanuga intends to surpass the Gambia model by transforming the sector, as a lead revenue earner to the Liberian government, for the benefit of the people, through employment generation.
From recent activities in the tourism sector, particularly the new autonomy of tourism, separated from the Ministry of Information, Liberia is now set to be the new and choicest tourism destination in Africa
