2027: Kano govt tasks committee to mobilise 10 million eligible voters

Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf has tasked the Committee on Voters Registration to double the number of eligible voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a task to mobilise no fewer than 10 million eligible voters in the forthcoming voters registration exercise to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Inaugurating the Committee headed by the state Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Governor Yusuf, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouq, tasked members of the Committee to ensure that every individual above 18 years in Kano gets registered ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the SSG, members of the Committee include traditional and religious leaders, and representatives of all political parties in the state.

He said the Committee, which was designed to be apolitical, is expected to carry all stakeholders along irrespective of political and religious affiliations.

Farouq said Governor Yusuf was passionate about ensuring that Kano maintained its status as the state with the highest registered voters in the 2027 elections, insisting that the Committee must take its campaign to all the nooks and crannies of the state to ensure that all eligible voters are persuaded to register and collect their voter’s card.

Governor Yusuf further tasked the  36-member Committee to mobilise the citizens and ensure they get registered, highlighting that voter cards are a veritable instrument for citizens to exercise their civic duties and elect who governs them.

According to him,  Kano state remains a politically vibrant state in the entire nation, adding that the government seems to have it necessity to put in place an active and responsive process that will ensure full participation of all eligible voters in the registration exercise.

Governor Yusuf, who reminded the Committee that the state has about five million voters, insisted that there was a need to double the number to 10 million by the end of the exercise.

He also tasked the committee to ensure they collaborate with INEC and other relevant stakeholders to enlighten and mobilise the public, as well as monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the process.

In his remarks, the chairman of the Committee, Comrade Waiya, expressed appreciation to Governor  Yusuf for reposing confidence in the Committee and promised that they would work around the clock to hit the target.
