* Changes Constitutional Term Limit

President Allasane Quatara of Côte d’Ivoire confirmed in a national televised broadcast today, July 29, 2025, that he would contest, for the fourth time, the upcoming Presidential election, just three months away, in October 2025.
“ I’m contesting because the constitution allows me to seek another term and my health allows it”, he said today on televised networks. He has successfully changed the constitutional clause on the presidential term limit.
Quatara, 83, first came to power in 2010, defeating Laurent Gbagbo, in an election that snowballed into a civil war, with about 300,000 dead.
He won the second election and contested the third time, after his anointed successor, Amadou Coulibaly, died mysteriously.
Today’s announcement, confirming his fourth term bid, is another severe blow to the Maada Bio-led ECOWAS.
This is worsened by neighbouring Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe, who is now engulfed in street protests over tenure elongation. Guinea-Bissau’s President Omaro Mbalo’s saga and Gambia’s President Adama Barrow’s thirrd term bid in 2026, through masterminding former President Yahya Jammeh’s 1997 constitution.
With these developments, the Bio-led ECOWAS is fraught with huge challenges to stem a crisis evolving in the region
