This year’s Liberia’s independence is quite different and remarkable. A large contingent of African leaders has arrived for the 178 independence anniversary of Africa’s oldest republic.

Nigeria, the powerhouse of West Africa, is represented by Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, as President Tinubu was unavoidably not present. Sources say he would have personally come but was severely tied to burning state matters.

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, Ghana’s John Dramani Mahama, Senegal’s Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Guinea-Bissau’s Omaro Sissoko Embalo, and others are currently in Monrovia.

President Boakai is celebrating his second anniversary since he came to power in January 2024.

Liberia gained independence on 26 July 1847. It is the oldest African republic, and the only African country that signed the establishment of the League of Nations in 1920, the UN charter in 1945. It is a founding member of the OAU, now AU, and ECOWAS.

Since the assumption of office, President Boakai has embarked on tight and rigorous reforms, to bolster the economy
