The National Leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has lamented the spate of poverty and dilapidated roads in northern Nigeria, advising the Federal Government to exhibit fairness and equity in the distribution of national resources.
Kwankwaso who was the presidential candidate of NNPP in the 2023 general elections, spoke at Coronation Hall, Kano Government House, on Thursday, during the stakeholders’ engagement meeting organized by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to gather the position of all stakeholders in Kano, ahead the North-West public hearing by the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.

Kwankwaso, who decried mounting poverty and educational backwardness in the North, highlighted the gory state of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway, whose construction commenced years ago.
He advised the Federal Government to ensure the even distribution of national resources and democratic dividends so that all regions in the country would be equitably captured.
“Let me advise the Federal Government on the distribution of federal resources.
From the information available to us, it is like most of the national budget is now tilting in one direction in this country,” he said.
“Let me advise those who are struggling by all means to take everything to remember that some of the issues that we have in this part of the country today have to do with a lack of resources and mismanagement of the little that comes in.
“That is why we have insecurity, we have poverty, and so on. It is happening here mainly, but like a desert, it would go everywhere,” he added.
Kano state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, in his opening remarks, described Nigeria’s constitution as a supreme law whose contents must reflect the aspirations and positions of every part of the country.
According to him, “we are here to make sure that the voices of our people are reflected in the laws that govern our nation. As you know, constitutional amendments give us a great opportunity to address long-standing issues and ensure that they meet the needs of our people.
“I hope that by the end of our discussion today, we will reach a non-partisan consensus that will withstand the test of time and strengthen our democracy.
“Let me use this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders, political class, traditional rulers, CSOs, youths and women groups, students, security agencies, and journalists who contributed effectively to the meeting.”
Governor Yusuf added that the state government and indigenes of Kano state welcome the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 constitution on Saturday, 26 July 2026, for the North-West public hearing.
Our Correspondent reports that all critical stakeholders, including members of the State and National Assembly, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the Media, business community, traditional and religious leaders, women leaders, market leaders, students’ union leaders, labour and professional organisations such as NLC, TUC, NBA, NIA, NUJ, NURTW, NUT, NMA, were fully represented during the meeting.
