A Yoruba Muslim Group in Nigeria has expressed its total displeasure at the killings in Benue and other states in Nigeria.
The President of the League of Muslims for Yoruba National Unity, Sheikh Morufudeen Olowu, in a release made available to newsmen, condemned killings and violent activities in Nigeria, emphasising the need for peaceful coexistence among citizens.
In the release, Sheikh Olowu stressed that Islam is a religion of peace, practical individuality, and congregational cohesion, emphasising that Muslims are free to worship and make individual choices of worship and should not be forced.
The Sheikh condemned violent activities, including kidnapping, rape, and killings, and called for the prosecution of those who intimidate or disturb others over religious or cultural differences.
The League of Indigenous Yoruba Muslims for Religious Unity, under Sheikh Olowu’s leadership, is calling for unity among Yoruba people, kindness, and intact relationships within communities.
The group advocates for the use of Sharia law for Muslims and common law for everyone, emphasising that no one should be compelled to follow a particular religion or ideology.
“Islam is a religion of PEACE… We Yoruba Muslims understood this from the word go. Let us try and separate the Culture of the Yoruba people from recent mutations which may have brought us into chaos in living our lives correctly as humans.”
Sheikh Olowu’s statement highlights the need for peaceful coexistence and unity among citizens, particularly in the face of religious and cultural differences.
