The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development,  Abdullahi Yusuf Atta, has empowered former Local Government Councilors in Kano state with N13, 200, 000.

Each out of the 44 Local Government Areas in the state, received N300, 000 to be shared among the former Councilors.

Ata, a former Speaker of Kano state House of Assembly, said the gesture was a demonstration of his  commitment to inclusive governance and grassroot development.

The event held at the Federal Secretariat, Katsina Road, Kano, brought together past Supervising Councilors, Councilors, and Special Assistants who served across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State from 2014 to date.

Atta said the empowerment initiative organized in the spirit of the Eid El Kabir celebration, was aimed to,  “acknowledge and appreciate the selfless contributions of these grassroots leaders who, though out of office, remain an integral part of the democratic fabric of the state.”

He was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Gwangwazo emphasized the importance of remembering those who served diligently at the grassroots level.

“Service to the people is service to God. The story of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah reminds us of the blessings that come with sacrifice and selflessness. I see a reflection of that sacrifice in the lives of those who served our communities at the grassroots with sincerity, often with little recognition or reward,” he said.

He further noted that,  “leaders at the third tier of government bear the heaviest burden of governance because they are closest to the people. Sadly, many of them are often forgotten after leaving office.

“But today, we make a strong statement—that their  services will not go unnoticed. That there is dignity in public service. That those who served faithfully at the local level may yet be called upon to serve at higher levels.”

Also speaking at the event, the former Chairman of Fagge Local Government Council, Ibrahim Mohammed Fagge, urged the beneficiaries of the programme not to relent in their community engagements.

 “Leadership is a calling, and while you may currently be out of office, your commitment to the people must never waver. I believe many among you still have much to offer, and in due course, some will return to public service, possibly in even greater capacities,” Fagge said.

According to Fagge,  Atta has long been a staunch advocate for pro-poor policies and grassroot engagement.

“Since assuming office as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, he has prioritized projects and interventions that directly impact low-income communities.

“From championing the rehabilitation of rural housing units to facilitating access to affordable housing finance for artisans and petty traders, his tenure has been marked by a consistent drive to deliver the dividends of democracy to those who need it most.

“Under his watch, several federal housing projects in Kano State have been accelerated, with a clear bias for inclusive development. He has facilitated youth engagement and skills acquisition programs in partnership with local councils and community-based organizations.

The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Hon. Seyi Olorunsola; senior party stalwarts; and community leaders from across the state.
