Kano State Government has approved over ₦6.9 billion to fund new educational infrastructure and scholarship programmes in its bid to improve the education sector.

During the 27th Executive Council meeting held on April 28, 2025, the government allocated ₦1.2 billion for the comprehensive upgrade of the School for Islamic Studies (SIS) in Dawakin Tofa, Tofa, and Ungogo Local Government Areas.

Another ₦327 million was approved to settle outstanding liabilities in the education sector.

The Council endorsed the release of ₦5.38 billion for the continuation of the state’s foreign scholarship scheme and the commencement of a new domestic scholarship program for indigent students.

According to the statement issued by Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson,  Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, these interventions form part of the state’s long-term agenda to restore the glory of the education system and prepare Kano’s youth for the future.

“This investment reflects Governor Yusuf’s vision of creating equal educational opportunities and global competitiveness for our students,” the statement added.

*Kano earmarks N1.7 billion to tackle water scarcity. 

Kano state government has earmarked  ₦1.7 billion as utility payment to tackle water scarcity in the state, as the state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to reforming the water sector.

The Kano State Executive Council made the approval during the 27th executive council meeting.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the fund covers electricity, diesel, and petrol bills for operations at the Greater Kano Water Works and the State Water Board Headquarters from January to March 2025.

The Council also reiterated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to comprehensive water sector reforms, including infrastructure upgrades and energy sustainability.

According to the statement, the payment is a “strategic intervention to ensure uninterrupted water supply across Kano.”

The Council reaffirmed plans to implement a strategic water master plan involving stakeholder engagement, improved revenue collection, and environmental sustainability in managing water resources.

The governor had previously pledged that no household in Kano would be left behind in the state’s vision for clean and safe water access.
