Today, we remember and celebrate the posthumous birthday of Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo, a statesman of rare vision, an intellectual powerhouse, and a leader whose entire life was dedicated to the betterment of his people. He was a man of deep and unwavering principles, a politician driven by conviction rather than convenience, and a public servant who saw power as a means to uplift society, not a tool for personal gain.

Awolowo was not just a politician; he was a builder of institutions, a pioneer of progressive governance, and a champion of social justice. As Premier of the Western Region, he laid the foundations for modern development, introducing free primary education, quality healthcare, and robust infrastructure—policies that lifted millions from ignorance and poverty. His leadership was defined by integrity, foresight, and an unyielding commitment to truth, even when it was politically inconvenient.

In stark contrast, many of today’s leaders in Nigeria have abandoned the ideals of service and sacrifice. Their major preoccupation is self-enrichment at the expense of the people, feeding off corruption, deception, and ignorance. They thrive on lies, dishonesty, and self-centeredness, with little concern for the suffering masses. While Awolowo sought to educate and empower his people, today’s rulers keep the populace in darkness, ensuring that poverty and illiteracy remain tools for political control.

Yet, beyond his public life, Awolowo was also a devoted family man, a man of discipline, and a husband who found strength and stability in his wife, Chief (Mrs.) HID Awolowo, and his children. His home life reflected the same values he preached in public—commitment, order, and responsibility.

Whence shall we see another like him? Where is the leader today with his depth of intellect, his moral clarity, his ability to plan beyond the next election cycle? Nigeria aches for a leader of his stature—one who understands that governance is a solemn trust, not an avenue for looting and personal gratification.

As we honor Chief Awolowo’s memory, let us not just reminisce about his greatness but also reflect on how far we have strayed from his ideals. Nigeria remains in desperate need of true leaders—leaders who, like him, will embrace knowledge, integrity, and the genuine desire to uplift the people. Until such a time, we will continue to ask: When shall we see another like him?
