Omowunmi Kayode
The Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), led by Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has recently honoured the contributions of prominent Nigerians to the country’s educational sector. In a significant event, the university named 43 of its buildings and facilities after notable individuals who have profoundly impacted Nigerian education.
The honourees include former Vice Chancellors of the university, Nigerian leaders, educationists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists who have contributed immensely to the development of education in Nigeria. Some of the notable individuals include the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, pioneer vice-chancellor, Professor Chinedu Nebo, Professor J. F. Ade Ajayi, and Chief Folorunso Alakija, among others.
Professor Fasina remarked that this initiative aims to acknowledge and celebrate their substantial contributions and to encourage the university community and the nation to pursue excellence. He emphasized the university’s dedication to fostering outstanding education and its commitment to continually honour those who significantly enhance the sector. The Vice-Chancellor added that the university was committed to promoting excellence in education and would continue to recognize and honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the sector.
The named buildings and facilities serve as a lasting tribute to the honourees’ enduring legacies in education. It is also expected to inspire students and staff of the university to strive for excellence and make meaningful contributions to society.
