AIG Mohammed Usaini Gumel in-charge of Zone 7, Abuja

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, has been posted to man the Zone 7 headquarters, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

According to a statement made available to our Correspondent, signed by Zone 7  Police Public Relations Officer,  SP. M.B Abdulkadir, AIG Gumel, assumed duty on Monday, 11 February, 2025.

The police boss is expected to bring a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Department of Training and Development, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Commissioner of Police in Sokoto, Kano, and the Technical Intelligence Unit of the Force Headquarters.

“His expertise in peace and security promotion, community policing, and rehabilitation strategies will be invaluable in his new position,” the statement added.

AIG Mohammed Usaini Gumel holds a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from the Federal University of Technology Minna, a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and a National Certificate of Education from the Advanced Teachers’ College Gumel, affiliated with Bayero University Kano.

He also holds a West African School Certificate from Government Secondary School Karaye, Kano State.

Among AIG Gumel’s notable achievements is the successful rehabilitation of over 600 former criminals, empowering them to become productive members of society.

He was crucial in maintaining peace during the 2023 governorship elections in Kano.

AIG Gumel also served as the Nigerian Police Contingent Commander in the UN Mission in Liberia; headed the police component of ECOWAS Peace Support Operations during the Gambian post-election situation in 2015; reduced crime rates in Sokoto and Kano through community policing initiatives and rehabilitation strategies.

AIG Gumel transformed over 700 individuals from criminals to productive community members in Kano through community policing initiatives and rehabilitation strategies.

At the global circle, he served as the Nigerian Police Contingent Commander in the UN Mission in Liberia (2011); headed the police component of ECOWAS Peace Support Operations during the Gambian post-election situation in 2015; participated in the ECOWAS Peace Support Operations Division (2016-2021).

AIG Gumel also attended the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana, for the Command Post Exercise (CPX) on the Operationalization of ECOWAS Standby Force (2012).

He received professional training at the Police Academy, Kano: Cadet ASP Course (1992-1994); Police Staff College, Jos: Intermediate Command Course (2007); Industrial Training Fund Centre, Jos: Management Course (2007); Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Lagos: Advanced Intelligence Course (2010).

AIG Gumel was also trained at the UN Integrated Mission Training Centre, Liberia: Courses on Team Work, Development, and Report Writing (2011);

Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana: Command Post Exercise (CPX) on the Operationalization of ECOWAS Standby Force (2012);

UK DFID J4A/NPF: Technical Working Group & Change Management Team (2012); ATA-9641 & ATA-10020: Anti-Terrorism Courses, U.S. Department of State (2013).

He further received professional training at the Metropolitan Police, UK: Terrorist Financing Investigation Course (2014), London; NATO Allied Joint Command, Italy: Exercise Planning Course (2016);

Training of Trainers Course (2017) by North-Rhine Westphalia State Police, Germany; EMP Bamako, Mali: International Peacekeeping Contingent Equipment Course (2018); Weapon, Ammunition, and Management Training (2021), NDC Abuja; GISEC, UAE: Global Information Security Council Training (2022); Community Policing Course, Part-1 Conducted by International Law Enforcement Academy, Gaborone, Botswana, in cooperation with the US Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (September 2024).

AIG Gumel has received several awards and commendations, which include Nigerian Police Community Policing Advocate of the Year 2024;

Commendation Letter from the UK Metropolitan Police Service;  Security Achievers Award of Excellence (2023) from the Coalition of Northern Journalists Forum (CONJOF);

Commendation Letter from the Kano Concerned Citizens Initiative (KCCI) (2023);  Epitome of Good Leadership Award from the Sir Ahmadu Bello Northern Youth Council of Nigeria;

Award of Integrity and Zero Tolerance for Corruption from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Award of Excellence from the African Trust Magazine

AIG Mohammed Gumel is expected to bring his wealth of experience to effectively police the zone.

He is expected to build on his past achievements and work tirelessly to promote community policing and ensure peace and stability within his area of responsibility.

He, however,  solicited for maximum support and cooperation of the general public in the FCT and Niger State as he sets to sustain the prevailing peace and stability in the Zone.
