Just in: President Buhari reappoints Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday reappointed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for another five-year term, according to reports by the Channels Television.

Yakubu, a professor of Political History and International Studies, became INEC’s chairman  after the president’s nomination was ratified during an emergency Council of State meeting held on October 21, 2015.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina said in a letter to the President of the Senate, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), he was  pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term.

The statement explained that Prof. Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari in November 2015.

But with his reappointment,  Yakubu has become the first INEC chairman to have a second term.
