There is anxiety in Nasarawa over Adamu Suleiman, a lawmaker in the State House of Assembly who died on Saturday after a ‘brief illness’ following conformation that he was actually killed by COVID-19.
Governor Abdullahi Sule told journalists on Sunday result of the test conducted on the lawmaker who represented Nasarawa Central Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly came out after his death and burial on Saturday.
The Governor who spoke to journalists in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, said the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC protocol was not followed in the burial of the lawmaker because the result of the test was still being awaited at the time he was buried.
This revelation is generating anxiety among the people of the state with fears that many of those who came for condolence visits, participated in the burial as well as members of family of the late lawmaker may have been infected with the virus.
There are also fears that the lawmaker may have infected many of his colleagues and health workers who treated him before his death.
“The member participated in all the Assembly sittings, a development which has complicated our situation,” the Governor said while alluding to the problem.
He however added that the House of Assembly would be shut down and all the State’s lawmakers will be quarantined to contain the spread of the virus in the state.
The Governor also assured that members of the late lawmaker’s family and those living in his house have gone into isolation while their samples have also been collected for testing by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
He added that persons who took part in the burial of the lawmaker would also be isolated and tested for COVID-19, while the House of Assembly complex is to be closed until it is decontaminated.
