A 43-year-old man, Rabiu Jelii, on Friday, appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly defrauding a man of N500, 000.

Jelili, who resides in Kukoyi Street, Alapere, Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec. 10, 2018 at Iyaro Street, Ogudu, Lagos.

Ihiehie said that the defendant claimed that he was sent by the complainant, Adeyemi Dabiri, to collect rents from his tenants, a representation he knew was false.

“The defendant pretended to represent the complainant and collected a house rent of N500, 000 from one of the tenants and spent it,” Ihiehie said.

The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years jail term for stealing.

The magistrate, Mrs H. B Mogaji, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to April 29
