The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kano State Branch has given the state police command 48 hours to tender public apology to the association for allegedly attacking and maltreating its members while on their lawful duties.

The Secretary of the association, Mujtaba Adamu-Ameen, gave the ultimatum while addressing a news conference in Kano on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, Tuesday March 19, 2019 at around 2300 hours heavily armed policemen numbering about 30 in six Hilux Police vans, along side a political party member wearing red cap and some pressmen stormed an election petition secretariat.

“Our colleagues were working at the secretariat in preparation for election petition. They molested, arrested and took them away with their working document to the state police command at Bompai Kano where they were put in cell and spent the whole night,”he said.

He said all explanations made by the lawyers on their status and what they were doing with sufficient proof of request of results sent to INEC and certified true copy obtained failed on deaf ears.

He said the association had held a meeting and resolved to condemn the unprofesstional act of the police for molesting, arresting and detaining their colleagues.

“We condemn the unprofesstional act and demand an immediate Public apology from the Police.

He also called on the Police Commissioner, Mr Wakili Muhammad, to be non-partisan and professional in the discharge of his duties.

He claimed that it was becoming apparent that his action and that of his men were going contrary to the rule of law and their oath of office.
