Traditional rulers and religious leaders have been urged to stop celebrating people perceived to have amassed their wealth through suspicious and questionable means.

Mr Ibukun Agbaje, the Coordinator, National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps (NAVC) in Ekiti, made the plea on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti at an “Integrity Rally” to mark the 2018 World Anti-Corruption Day

Theme of the 2018 World Anti-Corruption Day is: “Every No Counts”.

According to Agbaje, the phenomenon of corruption had reached a near uncontrollable dimension, because those who are supposed to reject the overnight millionaires are not willing to apply the sledge hammer.

He decried a situation whereby a person with no reliable means of livelihood suddenly becomes a millionaire and get honoured almost immediately by his town’s traditional ruler with one of the most prominent chieftaincy titles.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that Agbaje also decried a situation where such emergency millionaires were often welcomed back to their home towns with beatings of drums and thunderous shouts of praises.

He said that religious leaders were also not left out of the blame of aggravating corruption.

The coordinator said that both traditional rulers and clerics have role to play in stemming the pangs of corruption in the country.

He said that fraudsters would never have been so courageous to remain in their nefarious business if they know they would be questioned or rejected at the home front.
