A total of 201 students of the University of Ibadan bagged First Class Honours out of the 7,577 students that graduated with first degrees in the 2017/2018 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, disclosed this at the convocation ceremony of the institution on Monday in Ibadan.
” The total number of graduating students for the year 2018 is 7, 577, but only 201 were able to graduate with First Class Honours
“My joy is boundless in view of the coincidence of this year’s convocation and graduation ceremonies with the 70th anniversary celebration of Nigeria’s premier university,’’ Olayinka said.
He also said 1,735 students graduated with Second Class Upper, 4,363 students had Second Class Lower while 834, 69 and 372 students graduated in Third Class, Pass and Unclassified categories respectively.
The vice chancellor urged the graduating students to brace up for the challenges of the future, saying “there is no doubt that you will face challenges that will task your entrepreneurial spirit.’’
” Do not allow any problem to overwhelm you as I pray to God to always be with you and guide your steps to success,’’ he added.
Responding, the best overall graduating student, Miss Grace Oka, advised her colleagues to remain focused on their goals.
“We are gap fillers; we are on the mission to succeed. Outstanding set of 2017, let us find our voices, tell our stories. Do not just graduate with the hope of fitting into the existing system.
“Rather, do something beyond what has been done or always think of something that has never been done before.
“ If you think you can, then I tell you, you can,’’ she said.
