A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court , sitting at Giring, on Wednesday sentenced a 58 -year-old businessman, Mohammadu Hassan, to two years imprisonment for attempting to steal a block moulding machine, and escaping from lawful custody.

The convict had pleaded guilty on arraignment, to a 3 count- charge, offences that contravened the provisions of Sections 348, 95 and 172 of the Penal Code.

The chief magistrate, Hanatu Gokwat, sentenced Hassan to two years imprisonment with an option of N50, 000 fine for theft, and two years imprisonment or a fine of N15000, for escaping from lawful custody.
The magistrate said that the sentences would run concurrently.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Karimu Bashiru, told the court that the case was reported on Sept. 13 at Anglo- Jos Police Station by one Gyang Choji of Zaramangada.
The prosecutor said that the convict entered the block industry of the complaint and attempted to steal the moulding machine before he was caught.
‘’While the accused was arraigned for attempting to steal the machine, he managed to jump over the court fence and escaped, but the court mobilised a group of boys who went after him.
‘’He jumped into another compound and the people there raised alarm and he was rearrested and brought back to the court,’’ the prosecutor said.
