The police on Monday arraigned a 35-year-old man, Ikechukwu Okonkwo, in a Karu Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, over alleged mischief, cheating and deliberately damaging a car placed in his care.
The defendant, who resides in Nyanya, Abuja, is being tried for criminal breach of trust, cheating, mischief and criminal misappropriation.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Bobmanuel Hope, told the court that one Peter Chinedu of Jikwoyi, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, Abuja, on Sept. 29.
Hope alleged that the accused breached an agreement entered into with Chinedu.
He said that in September, Chinedu entrusted his Nissan car, with registration number AE85BKB to the accused on the agreement that he would remit N2,000 daily to him.
“But with intent to cheat Chinedu, the accused used the car for five days and failed to remit the money, which amounted to N10,000.
“The accused also deliberately damaged the car in the course of using it, which cost Chinedu N81,000 to repair, all amounting to N91,000,” Hope said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 312, 322, 309 and 327 of the Penal Code.
The accused denied the charges.
The judge, Abba Tukur, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until Oct. 26 for hearing.
