All appear set for defection of Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Some APC chieftains from Akwa Ibom State are speculating that the former governor of Akwa Ibom State will formally defect to their party next Wednesday or Thursday.
According to them, Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo accompanied by Senator (Dr ) Ita Enang, and leaders of the APC in Akwa Ibom will formally receive Senator (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio into APC at Ikot Ekpene Stadium on Thursday 9 August, 2018.
Sahara Reporters quoted Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transport and Director-General of President Mohammed Buhari’s campaign organization as confirming the imminent defection of Akpabio to APC, but saying he cannot confirm the date of the eventual defection
Also, the Special Assistant on Prosecution to President Muhammadu Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla, in a Facebook message on Saturday night also claimed that Akpabio will be received into APC on Thursday by Osinbajo and other top leaders of the party at a rally in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
Obono-Obla had also posted a photo of Akpabio with APC national leader, Bola Tinubu.
However, the fact that Akpabio is headed to APC was further confirmed on Sunday with photographs of the former PDP leader with President Buhari in London circulating on social media.
Akpabio, met with Buhari in London, where the president is currently spending a 10-day vacation.
The former had earlier met with Osinbajo in Abuja last week and other chieftains of the party.
But it was gathered that some chieftains of PDP had in the past few weeks tried without success to stop Akpabio from defection to APC.
However, Akpabio, seemed to have sealed his defection plans with visit to Buhari after his initial meeting with Osinbajo.
Akpabio who is still in London and is expected back in the country this week, according to reports perfected the condition for his defection as well as others that will jump ship with his to APC.
It will be recalled that the relationship between Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has not been very cordial.
Sources said the disagreement between the two leaders over political and financial matters was partly responsible for the move by Akpabio to join APC.
