Senator Sunmonu: rejects PDP

Two senators representing different senatorial district in  Oyo State have declared that they are not part of 15 lawmakers who defected to Nigeria’s biggest opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party from the rulling All Progressives Congress, contrary to reports widely circulated on Tuesday.

One of the lawmakers, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu said while it is true that she is leaving the APC as a result of the   running battle she has been vaving with the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi she is headed for African Democratic Congress, not PDP.

In a statement published on her Facebook page, the Senator who attributed her decision to leave APC to ”unresolved issues in the ruling party,” said, “Today, 24 July 2018, a letter was read during the Senate Plenary announcing the defection of some Senators from the All Progressives Congress (APC),” she wrote on her Facebook page.

“Please be advised that my defection is as a result of issues within the APC Oyo State Chapter. As we know, politics is local and despite the rhetoric, there has been little or no effort at the state level to reconcile differences by incorporating various stakeholders and interests.”

In his own case,  the senator representing Oyo South senatorial district, Soji Akanbi, was emphatic that he remained a member of All Progressives Congress, despite inclusion of his name among the 15 senators who defected to the opposition PDP earlier in the day.

The Senator told journalists after plenary that he remained ”a bona fide member of the APC” and that his name was wrongly included in the list lawmakers abandoning the ruling party.

“Initially today, my name was wrongly mentioned in the list of the people that defected to PDP. A point of order was raised. I was able to clear my name that I’ve never been part of defection from APC to PDP. I remain bona fide member of APC.”

The Senator showed journalists the votes and proceedings of the day to further prove his claim that his name was not on the list.

“This is the votes and proceedings of Tuesday 24 July 2018 and my name is not listed on the list of defectors. I remain a bona fide, committed, unrepentant member of APC. I’m here to put the record to order,” Akanbi said as he emphasised that he is not having any problem with his state governor.
