A 22-year-old unemployed man, Qudus Afolayan, was on Thursday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for alleged theft of a fridge worth N85,000.
The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Akpam Ikem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 10, at Deborah Shopping Complex located at Ajara area of Badagry.
He said the fridge belonged to the complainant, Mr Grillo Ilesanmi.
“The complainant was taking the fridge for repairs when he dropped it by the roadside in order to look for a car that would carry it.
“In a twinkle of an eye, the accused came out of nowhere, took the fridge and started walking away like nothing happened.
“When he was caught, he claimed that he carried the fridge to carry out a test on it,” the prosecutor said.
Ikem said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr Jimoh Adefioye, granted the accused N200, 000 bail, with a surety who must provide evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till Aug. 31 for further hearing.
