Two men — Joseph Anthony, 41 and Lawal Muhammad, 35 — on Friday appeared at a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over the alleged theft of cables worth N925, 680.

The accused, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which they pleaded not guilty, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

Police Prosecutor Ikechukwu Edumodior insisted that the accused committed the offences on May 31 at Vita Construction Ltd, Surulere, Lagos.

Edumodior said the accused broke into Vita Construction Company at night to steal the cables.

“They were caught by some security guards who handed them over to the police,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for convicted offenders.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case until July 23, for trial.
