The UK Department For International Development (DFID) has donated eight vehicles and office equipment to Zamfara and Kebbi to support nutrition activities in the two states.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kebbi and Zamfara were among five northern states that participated in a six-year DFID funded nutrition project tagged, “Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria (WINNN)”.
The project which winded up in 2017, was implemented through the Save the Children International, UNICEF and Action Against Hunger.
The remaining three states that participated in the programme were Jigawa, Katsina and Yobe.
Mr Muhammad Tanko, Zamfara Field Manager of Save the Children International, who presented the facilities on Thursday in Gusau, said the programme had helped to treat thousands of malnourished children in the two states.
He disclosed that the intervention programme in Zamfara was conducted in Bungudu, Shinkafi and Bakura local government areas, while in Kebbi three local governments of Gwandu, Dandi and Maiyama participated.
“We are presenting four Hilux vehicles to each of the two states aimed at supporting them to continue with the programme.
“Since the WINNN project has already ended last year and considering the importance of this project, we are donating these vehicles to encourage the two states to continue with the nutrition activities”, he said.
Responding, Alhaji Haruna Sallau, Permanent Secretary, Zamfara Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Alhaji Usman Bawa, a Deputy Director in Kebbi commended the DFID and Save the Children for their support to the development of the two states.
They pledged judicious utilisation of the vehicles and office equipment, and sought for continuous partnership with the two organisations to improve health care delivery to vulnerable persons.
