Seven policemen were killed while a yet to be ascertained number of civilians were injured on Monday night when some gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint in Galadimawa roundabout, a suburb of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Daily Trust quoted an unnamed resident of the community as confirming that the gunmen were stopped for search at the checkpoint when they opened fire on the policemen.
The source added that gun battle led to many pedestrians and traders around the roundabout to run for safety while many sustained various degrees of injuries.
He said this led to the deployment of more policemen to the community which is close to the ever busy Airport Road.
The Police in Abuja confirmed the incident.
