2 men remanded for rape in Benue

A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded two men in prison for allegedly raping a 13-year old girl.

The accused — Anselem Onyekachi and Aseer Anyo — both of New Road, Gboko North area of Benue, are being tried for rape.

The Magistrate, Mrs Regina Ochokwunu, who gave the order, said she granted the prosecution’s request for their remand to enable it conclude investigations on the case.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkarim Abubakar, told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Gboko, to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Makurdi, on June 20.

Abubakar said Imoter Asalumun of New Road, Gboko North, had on June 9, reported the case via a letter dated June 19, at the ‘A’ Division Police Station that his 13-year-old sister was raped.

He said the complainant had noticed that his sister on that fateful day, who was crying, could not walking properly.

“On inquiry, the victim said she had been raped by their neighbours (the accused).”

The offence contravened Section 284 of the Penal Code, Laws of Benue 2004.

The case has been adjourned until July 23.
