World Cup: Fans laud Enugu Govt. over viewing centres

Football fans in Enugu have commended the Enugu State Government for setting up viewing centres to enable residents watch the ongoing World Cup in Russia.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Sunday, the fans said that the viewing centres have enriched their world cup experience and expanded their friendship.

NAN recalls that the state government had opened viewing centres in strategic places in Enugu and Nsukka to enable residents watch the ongoing World Cup, tagged `Russia 2018.’

The viewing centres are located in large open spaces in the two cities and some educational institutions in the state.

Mr Chidi Ugwu, a resident of Edinburg Road, Enugu,said that the new viewing centres have helped people within the axis of Uwani to watch the World Cup matches especially that of Super Eagles when there was power outage.

Ugwu noted that the viewing centre in Queens School, Uwani, has always been orderly with a standby generating set and power inverter for steady power.

“We are happy that the governor is providing this people-oriented service to give us the opportunity to join the rest of the world and Nigerians to enjoy the ongoing World Cup,’’ he said.

Ralph Madu, a resident of Chime Avenue, Enugu,said that attending the viewing centres had afforded him opportunity to make more friends.

Oliver Chukwu, a resident of Ngwo in Enugu North council area, noted that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has made it possible for people of Ngwo community to watch the World Cup matches in the same place.
“This has promoted the spirit of friendship and brotherhood.

“The move shows how sensitive the state government responds to what affects the generality of the people,’’ Chukwu, who watches in an open field in Ngwo town, said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles will be locking horns with Argentina on Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time in their Group D final match.

NAN recalls that the Super Eagles lost its first match 2 – 0 to Croatia on Saturday, June 16; while the team defeated Iceland 2 – 0 on Friday, June 22.
