Two years ago, Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, preached about the need to honour Chief MKO Abiola, warning that until that injustice was addressed, Nigeria would continue to stumble from chattered hopes into numbing frustrations.

He picked the text of his sermon from 2 Samuel 21:12-14:

“David went and took the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead. (They had stolen their bodies from the public square at Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.) 13 David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from there, and the bones of those who had been killed and exposed were gathered up. 14 They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish, at Zela in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer in behalf of the land.

He compared the case of June 12, 1993 election to that of the three-year famine that the death of Saul, Jonathan and his children inflicted on Israel. To avert the pague, David the new king brought their bones from Jabesh Gilead where the Philistines buried them. Then, problems ceased in the land.

Bakare, therfore, advised that the family of Abiola could be invited so that he “be given a posthumous honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), otherwise, any ruler standing on red carpet is standing on his blood.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, as if heeding the warning, declared June 12 as the new Democracy Day and gave Abiola GCFR.
