A Karu Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted N200,000 bail to a 36-year-old driver, Frank Ochanyi, who allegedly sold a car with false documents.
Magistrate Mariam Okebukola granted bail to the driver after he pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge of breach of trust, cheating, giving false statement and fabricating false evidence.
Okebukola ordered the driver to produce two sureties in like sum, also as a condition for the bail.
The prosecutor, Mr Ayotunde Adeyanju, had told the court that one Mr Chinecherem Okorie of Asokoro Quarters, Abuja, reported the case at the Karu Police Station on Nov. 17, 2017.
Adeyanju said that the accused breached an agreement between Okorie and him, thereby cheating the complainant.
“Sometime in November, 2017, the defendant collected N150,000 from the complainant on the pretext that he wanted to sell his Black Golf 3 car with registration number LFA187ZX to him.
“He dishonestly converted the money for personal use; after much persuasion, he handed the car over to the complainant with false documents.
“The defendant claimed that he owned the said car whereas he falsely swore to an affidavit indicating he owned the car.
“During police investigation, it was discovered that the car was entrusted to the defendant on hire purchase by the real owner, Mr Chimobi Okoyi,” Adeyanju said.
The offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code, according to the prosecutor.
The case has been adjourned until June 28 for hearing
