The Chairman, Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, (AWMN), Lagos Chapter, Oladipo Egbeyemi, has appealed to Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode to create a framework that would enable the Private Sector Participants (PSP) collaborate with the Visionscape Company work together to clean up Lagos., and denied allegations of blackmail and sabotage leveled against it by the Lagos state government.

He said, “We will also like to state categorically that we have not and will not condone any form of sabotage or blackmail of the Government of Mr. Akinwumni Ambode. We remain committed to an amicable legal resolution with government and collaborate with all stakeholders to not only restore Lagos to her once glorious clean state of old, but to also actualize the Cleaner Lagos that all Lagosians will be proud of.”

The association through its chairman also called for the enforcement of government policy of door-to- door collection. The enforcement of the policy, they said, will tackle the waste problem at the point of generation, which is acknowledged international best practice.

Lamenting that the current distributed bins across the streets and high ways without adequate provision for evacuation has increased the number of black spots in the metropolis, he urged the Lagos state government to ensure that all existing dump sites are better accessible at all times.

According to the association, there is need to provide sustainable enforcement for non-compliance to house to house disposal and nonpayment. The PSP operators, who said they were proud of being responsible for making Lagos a clean state but express sadness to see waste return to their beloved Lagos.

They stressed their commitment towards an amicable legal resolution with Government and collaborate with all stakeholders to not only restore Lagos to her once glorious clean state of old but to actualize the Cleaner Lagos initiative.

He said there should be “enforcement of sanitation practice of bagging and containerization of wastes and providing sustainable enforcement for non-compliance to house to house disposal and non- payment. It demands that all stakeholders should remain committed to the Rule of Law and avoid any measure that will create divisions and anarchy.

“We are proud of being responsible for making Lagos a clean state and are saddened to see waste return to our beloved Lagos.”
