Nineteen people were killed on Saturday when a double decker bus overturned in Hong Kong, police said.

“The latest figures show a total of 19 persons, which include 17 male and two female, were certified dead at the scene. We are still counting the number of injuries,” a spokeswoman told dpa.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, she said.

KMB bus 872 rolled over during the incident on Tai Po Road on Saturday , though the cause of the crash remains unclear.

She did not have any more details and did not give her name, as is customary under department rules.

The South China Morning Post newspaper said it was the Asian financial centre’s deadliest traffic accident since a 2003 bus accident that killed 21

“The Hospital Authority said that 47 were injured in the accident – 19 sustained serious injuries and 28 are in stable condition.

“The injured were taken to 12 different hospitals, and a temporary morgue was set up at the scene,” the report stated.

KMB has apologised on its Facebook page and changed its profile photo to a black logo: “KMB expresses extreme regret and sadness at this accident, and deeply apologises.”

KMB Chief Executive Carrie Lam, has cancelled her original plans for the evening and is closely following the situation, according to her office.

Last September, three people were killed and 31 injured after a City bus double-decker mounted a kerb in Sham Shui Po.

In 2003, 21 died and 20 were injured in the worst road traffic accident in Hong Kong history when a KMB double decker bus crashed through a guardrail and down a hill off Tuen Man Road after colliding with a truck.(dpa/NAN)
