Peace Corps of Nigeria, PCN has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the bill establishing the organization as passed by the National Assembly into law.

Mutairu Habib, South-west zonal Commandant of PCN told journalists in Lagos that PCN is a United Nations (UN) recognized organization with the primary objective of promoting peace in Nigeria.

The organization argued that signing of the bill into law will help to stop the constant harassment of the Corps by security agencies, especially the Police.

He added that the corps do not carry arms and not in contention with any existing security agency of government or in competition with any other organization.

“We are waiting anxiously for President Muhammadu Buhari’s a assent to the Peace Corps Bill, which is sure to provide jobs for thousands of able-bodied youths across the length and breadth of the nation, and promote peace and unity which is a vital component in our drive to entrench a lasting democracy, a thriving economy, and sustained socio-economic development.

“We therefore pledge our full support for all existing security agencies of the Federal Republic of Nigeria most especially in the face of the various security challenges such as insurgency, kidnapping, vandalism and other related crimes,” he added.

Habib urged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to immediately unseal the Corps’ Abuja headquarters and stop further harassment of its officers in accordance with recent court directive.

The Court had also directed the Nigerian Police to pay N12.5 million compensation to PCN.
