A veteran administrator, Mr Ajao Emmanuel, on Wednesday called for improved teachers’ remuneration as a strategy to promote standards of education.

Emmanuel, Deputy Director, Human Resource, Nigerian Police Headquarters, Abuja, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that increased incentives would motivate teachers to be devoted.

According to him, a well-motivated teacher will not engage in businesses that will affect his or her core job.

Emmanuel added that governments must be committed to teachers’ training and equipment.

“If all these are done, we will see more commitment on the part of teachers; more commitment from teachers will lead to better results in the lives of students.

“If teachers are well motivated, they will not open shops to sell or quickly teach and run out to look for money,” he said.

Emmanuel said that standards of education in Nigeria had not fallen.

“I have never agreed that the standards of education in Nigeria have fallen.

“When you look at the kind of children we have today, they are exposed to so many things and are highly intelligent.

“There are a lot of things that children of today are doing, that we could not do,’’ he said.
