Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Sunday congratulated the state-owned female football club, the Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia, for winning the 2016/2017 Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) title.
Al-Makura praised the club in a statement by his Special Assistant (SA) on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Tukur, in Lafia.
He said the club has made the state proud with the success which, according to him, has further proved the determination of the state to take sports to greater heights.
The governor vowed that the state government would work assiduously with relevant sports stakeholders to ensure that the players are well trained, equipped and prepared for future tournaments ahead.
He said this would help to bring more glory to the state.
“The female team has shown the true spirit of sportsmanship and patriotism with an uncommon zeal to succeed and I want to assure that the state government will continuously provide the necessary support required to earn more laurels for the state,” Al-Makura said.
The governor also commended the players’ exceptional class in winning and urged the victorious team and the coaching crew to begin to plan and work towards future engagements.
He then promised to ensure the state continues to be enabling and conducive for sports development by ensuring that facilities are provided in all sporting centres across the state.
“Sportsmen and women will also be well motivated and safeguarded to get the best out of them,’’ Al-Makura said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Amazons had won the five-day NWFL Super 4 competition at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
During the Oct. 9 to Oct. 13 event, they defeated Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels and Delta Queens to emerge champions of the NWFL 2016/2017 season.
