Female Advocacy Mentoring Empowerment (FAME) Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), on Wednesday gave scholarship to eight pupils from LEA Primary school Jabi and Kugbo in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Ronke Bello, the founder of the foundation said the scholarship was in commemoration with the launching of the #1girl 1pen campaign in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
She said that five girls were selected from LEA Primary School Kugbo and three from LEA Primary School Jabi, saying that it is a full scholarship all through their Primary education.
According to her, LEA is meant to be free education but presently it is not totally free, some payment are made for books including their transportation to school.
“For five years I have been advocating for females and girls, my advocacy is to support girls and that is why we are here today to give them full scholarship all through primary school.
“The 1girl 1pen campaign is the campaign for girls education in Africa and we launched it officially in August, since then we have been able to advocate in Tanzania, Gambia, Zimbabwe and about five Africa countries.
“We are working toward creating awareness about the campaign on the importance of girl-child education, why you have to educate a girl child.
She said that the criteria for the beneficiary was their talents, performance in school and girls that their parents cannot afford to pay their fees.
However, Mrs Lydia Auta, a teacher from LEA Kugbo expressed joy over the scholarship given to the pupils, saying it was an eye opener to parents.
She said that the foundation was helping rural mothers because they have been cheated for long by not allowing girl-child to go through school; getting them married early was responsible for many challenges.
