The 1991 set of Titcombe College Egbe Old Students’ Association on Friday performed the ground-breaking for the construction of a N10 million 200-seater examination hall in the institution.
The President of the association, Mr Eludayo Eluyemi, during the ceremony in Yagba West Local Government Area , Kogi, that the association considered it necessary to give back to the school which gave them so much.
“We have several projects in the pipeline but we want to start with the examination hall first.
“We will equally meet with the school management to ascertain their needs so as to avoid repetition of project, ” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Eluyemi advised the present crop of students of the college to be serious with their studies to build a better future.
“As you know, secondary school is the basic foundation; it prepares one for future endeavours.
“ Whatever we are today was because we passed through Titcombe College, so whatever one learns in secondary school will guide him or her in future,” Eluyemi said.
The Coordinator, Abuja zone, Mr Kenneth Bamisaye, said the project would be ready for use in one year.
He appealed to other alumni who were yet to identify with the association to do so.
According to him, the association has over 100 members and each of them is to contribute N50, 000 for the project.
He also encouraged those who were not financially buoyant but had the interest to be part of the noble cause to identify with the association.
“We want all the members of the 1991 set to be part of this project even if it is N1,000 that they can contribute we will understand their financial status.”
Earlier, Mrs Folaranmi Idowu, Coordinator, Kwara State Zone, said there was a need for the old students to appreciate their alma-mater for grooming them.
She said visiting the school after 26 years of graduation was a thing of joy to them.
Idowu also advised the students not to relent in their studies, adding that hard work was the bedrock of success in life.
She noted that anybody who had the opportunity to be educated should not abuse it because that was a determinant of better future.
Idowu, however, advised the students to be sources of pride and encouragement to their parents and the society.
The Principal of the college, Mr Johnson Onirinwa, expressed appreciation for the support.
“As big as the school is, it does not have modern examination hall, school, among others.
“ I want you to bear in mind that some enemies of progress will blame and criticise you for assisting your alma-mater.
“I urge you not to listen to them instead continue to do your best, for everything, there is reward,” he said.
Titcombe College ECWA Egbe was established in 1951.
