Woman, 23, gets 1 month jail term for misappropriation

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old woman, Medina Mamman, to one month imprisonment for criminal misappropriation.

Mamman of Daki- biu, Jabi, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of criminal misappropriation and prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy.
She told the court that she used the money for an emergency, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, in his judgment, gave the convict an option of N5, 000 fine.
Sadiq also ordered her to pay N15,000 as compensation to the nominal complainant.
He advised the convict to desist from committing crime, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.
“It pays to be honest than to cheat people,’’ Sadiq said.
Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu had told the court that one Precious Pikin of Utako village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on Sept. 10.
Dalhatu said that the convict was given N15,000 on Sept. 2, to deliver to her friend, but she dishonestly converted the money to her personal use.
The prosecutor added that Mamman confessed to the crime during police investigation and begged for mercy.
Dalhatu said the offence contravened Section 309 of the Penal Code.
