A Rwandan-born man was on Wednesday charged with genocide and other crimes during the 1994 ethnic massacres in the central African country, Swedish court records showed.
Theodore Tabaro, who is a Swedish citizen, is due to stand trial next week at the Stockholm district court.
The charges include genocide through murder, attempted murder, aggravated rape and plunder.
The 49-year-old is also accused of participating in and leading attacks on Tutsi civilians between April and May of 1994 in the south-western Cyangugu prefecture.
It is the Nordic country’s third case related to the 1994 killings in Rwanda, where an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed over a 100-day period.
The proceedings were expected to run until next year, court officials said.
Some hearings are also to be held in Rwanda. About 40 witnesses were expected to testify.
One incident involved attack on a school where about 800 people had sought refuge.
They were attacked by groups armed with guns, grenades and other weapons, the charge sheet read.
Women and girls held captive were systematically raped and Tabaro was also implicated in an attack on a monastery where 60 people were killed.
Tabaro was arrested in October 2016 following an extradition request from Rwanda which Stockholm rejected because of his Swedish citizenship.
Prosecutors and investigators had travelled to Rwanda several times.
Two other Rwandan-born men were earlier sentenced to life imprisonment in Sweden over similar crimes.
