A 56-year-old man, Gbenga Sodenke, on Wednesday, appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly defrauding one Mary Agagu of N3.6 million.
Sodenke, who lives at No. 5, Fadare Street, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a one-count charge of obtaining a truck under false pretence.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offence between April 2016 and July 2017 at Ilo-Awera Area, Toll-Gate, Ota.
Gbesi said that the accused collected a truck marked KRD 891 from one Mary Agagu under the pretext that he would hire it out to work and thereafter deliver the proceeds to the owner.
‘‘The accused made N3.6 million from the business and instead of delivering the money to the complainant as promised, he converted it to his personal use,’’ he told the court.
He said that the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.
Although, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, the Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted him bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit of means.
Banwo also ordered that the sureties must submit four recent passport-size photographs to the court and show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government.
The case was adjourned to Sept. 27 for hearing.
