A Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Friday sentenced a 53-year-old man, Musa Isah, to three months imprisonment for illegal possession of fire arms.

The Magistrate, Mrs Mariam Kings, sentenced Isah after he pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of arms.

Kings, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N50, 000.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that the accused committed the offence at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Kusherki village in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger.

Danladi said that one locally-made pistol and a single-barrel gun were recovered from the accused.

He said that an army officer attached to artillery regiment barracks, Kontagora, A. A Badmos, in collaboration with a vigilante group, arrested the accused and handed him over to the police.

Danladi said during police investigation, the accused confessed to have bought the guns without license for N49, 000 from one Gambo, now at large.

He said the offence contravened Section 27 (1) of the Fire Arms Act, 2004.

The accused, who pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the court to be lenient with him.
