Court orders arrest of businesswoman who jumped bail

A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court Aso Pada, on Tuesday revoked the bail granted a 30-year-old businesswoman, Sarah Samuel, for failure to appear in court after several adjournments.

Revoking the bail, the Judge, Mr Albert Maga, ordered for the arrest of the defendant and that she should be remanded in prison.
“The defendant’s bail is hereby revoked, she should be arrested and kept in prison custody.
“As for the surety, court gives him benefit of doubt to cooperate with police to find the defendant and failure to do this, he will forfeit his bail bond,’’ Maga said.
The prosecutor, Mr Agabi Auta, had told the court that since the defendant was admitted on bail, she failed to appear in court and her surety claimed ignorance of her whereabouts.
He prayed the court to disregard a medical report tendered by the surety because it had no date and official stamp.
“I urge the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the defendant and also her bail should be revoked,’’ Auta said.
The surety, Mr Emmanuel Sunday, had tendered the defendant’s medical report, which stated that the accused was hospitalised at Lafia General Hospital in Nasarawa State.
The defendant was first arraigned on Jan. 26, for criminal breach of trust and cheating, contrary to Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The judge had granted the defendant a N100, 000 bail, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 9 for hearing.
Court records showed that the defendant had not appeared in court since she was released on bail on Jan. 26.
