Unknown gunmen in Port Harcourt have kidnapped Dr. Alex Akani, a medical consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Department of Family Medicine, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) during the weekend.
Circumstances surrounding the kidnap of the renowned medical doctor remain hazy as of the time of filing in this story.
However, Public Relations Officer of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association, UPTH, Dr. Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, said in a statement that Akani was abducted from his home in Rumuekini, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
The group therefore appeal to the state government and the security agencies to ensure the safe release of their colleague.
The Spokesman of Rivers state Police Command, Omoni Nnamdi told this magazine that the police officers are already working towards safe rescue of the victim and the arrest of his abductors.
It would be recalled that medical doctors in Rivers had on several occasions staged public protest over the incessant kidnap of their colleagues while demanding for assurances from security agencies that adequate protection will be provided for them.
